Nationwide's Board changes

Nationwide Building Society today announces the appointment of Albert Hitchcock as an independent non-executive Director of the Society. Albert is a leader in information technology with a 33-year career in the technology industry. He will join the Board in January 2019 and, in addition, will be a member of both the IT & Resilience and Board Risk Committees.

Albert is currently Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer of Pearson PLC and a member of the Pearson Group Executive Board. Until November 2018 he also held the position of Technology Advisor to the Royal Bank of Scotland Board plc.

Albert has previously held senior leadership positions with Vodafone plc, where he was Group Chief Information Officer, and Nortel Networks Inc.

Nationwide also confirms Mitchel Lenson, a non-executive Director of the Board since 2011, will retire from the Society at the AGM in July 2019. Gunn Waersted, who joined the Board in June 2017, will replace Mitchel as Chair of the Society’s IT & Resilience Committee from March 2019.

David Roberts, Nationwide Building Society’s Chairman, said: “Albert is hugely experienced, having held senior roles on the executive committees of two FTSE 100 businesses. He joins at a point when advances in technology are completely reshaping markets and sectors, including financial services, and resetting the customer experience expectations of our 15 million members.

“Albert’s experience will undoubtedly be hugely valuable to the Board and management as we embark upon our ambitions £4bn transformation plan designed to position us as a leader during this period of unequalled change and opportunity. As importantly, Albert shares our values of mutuality and I am greatly looking forward to him joining the Board.

“Mitchel Lenson has been a non-executive director with Nationwide since 2011. His exceptional leadership track record and in-depth knowledge of technology and financial services have been invaluable and his expertise has deeply shaped our Society over the last seven years. On behalf of the Board and management I would like to thank Mitchel for the contribution he has made to the Society and we wish him well for the future.”
