Nationwide displays artworks in Hull to help build hope and optimism on the high street

Nationwide Building Society in Hull is proudly taking part in a unique project to transform its shop front to support Coventry in its year of Culture. The Show Windows project uses a unique exhibition approach by displaying artwork in front windows and has been produced as part of the 2021 UK City of Culture programme for Coventry. The Show Windows will be teaming up with Nationwide in Coventry, Hull and Liverpool to utilise their shopfronts in a bid to reach as many local residents as possible.

The works of art, created by Ben Javens are hoped to radiate hopefulness and optimism on the high street in what has been a challenging period. As an extension of Coventry’s City of Culture Year, Hull, previous UK City of Culture, is pleased to be helping celebrate Coventry and it’s skyline represented here as the Emerald City by Ben Javens. In one instance to invite us all to look at our home cities in a new way and to take adventures through them, like Dorothy into Oz before, and experience culture, colour and hope. It is also intended to reflect the rich and diverse culture that’s characteristic of Hull.

Emma Lawton, Deputy Branch Manager for Hull said, “I’m really excited and proud to help celebrate Coventry here in our Hull branch by displaying the work of Ben Javens in our windows. As a building society we’re dedicated to serving our members and local communities, and our Hull branch has been here for over 80 years doing exactly that. Nationwide has given £1.1million over the last three years to local causes across the North East area through our Community Grants programme, and we recently donated £10k to Dove House Hospice in Hull to help fund a ‘cuddle bed’ so visitors can spend precious time with loved ones.

“Being part of The Show Windows project has been really interesting. Ultimately we hope our members and the public enjoy seeing the city of Coventry being celebrated and it helps to brighten up everybody’s day.”
